“Exceeded expectations! Assembly was quite easy and excellent performance. I found the antenna very easy to get tuned to the frequency I wanted. Successfully tested using a VX-8DR on low power (> 1watt) into a 6M Repeater 11 miles away. The loop was sitting on my dining room table.

Great product!

Description

The 6M-F Six Meter Ham Band Magnetic Loop was initially conceived as a learning tool for those who may be interested in building a bigger HF band magnetic loop but wanted to understand the mechanics and basic theory first. With this antenna, you can experiment and learn, while making many contacts.

This antenna in “magnetic loop” theory will handle hundreds of watts, but we suggest keeping it to under 150 watts to avoid heating up the Teflon tuning screws. As the screws heat up, they become soft and can cause drift in SWR as the plates move.

Although “some” would consider it unconventional to build and use a Small Transmitting Loop (STL) on the VHF band of 6 meters, it actually serves a unique niche. Namely, it is extremely compact, which simplifies shipping, and is, therefore, a cost effective solution for those wanting to experiment with STLs. In addition, due to its smaller size, we are able to cost-effectively CNC laser cut the main loop and corresponding parts from 0.125″ thick aluminum, thus accurately replicating each and every unit.

Additionally, due to the relatively high frequency of the 6M band, this antenna exhibits enhanced characteristics over its bigger 30 megahertz and lower frequency brethren, such as a large instantaneous bandwidth. One should be able to achieve acceptable SWR values over an approximate 200 kHz range. This then affords the use of a fixed tuned capacitor, with the idea of setting the capacitor for your center frequency of interest, such as 50.125 MHz for SSB/CW, 50.300 MHz for Data, and 52.525 MHz for FM, or wherever you choose. From this center frequency, you will likely be able to QSY up or down by about 100 kHz in each direction, making this a set it and forget it mono band magnetic loop antenna.

This loop is very simple to assemble: simply clean up the machining artifacts, such as any flashing left by the laser cutting process, with simple sanding and finishing to the extent that you desire. We do not do this finishing in an effort to keep the cost to a bare minimum. By detailing the antenna, it allows you to take pride, and use workmanship to finish your specific 6M-F as you see fit. From there, you simply bolt on the two opposing capacitor plates, the base mount plate, and the feeder loop network. All the parts to complete the 6M-F are supplied, including the SO239 connector; you will need 50 ohm coax with a PL259, and or appropriate adaptors. Full detailed instructions and video will be made available to you.
